Users Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
