EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
