Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of his move to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that the former president be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
